Wear The Trend: High Socks

From the looks of the runway, thigh high and knee high socks are here to stay. I have jumped on the trend and now love it, but recognize that it can be a challenge to style. Y’all know I don’t believe in fashion rules for the most part, but here are a few pointers to get you in on the trend.

There are a few sock styles and lengths that are in for this year, which include thigh high, over the knee and knee high socks. Your vertical body type will play a factor in which style is most flattering on you, but as I said earlier there are no rules. In fact, at 5’2 I actually break the “rule” by choosing thigh highs as my sock of choice. It works for me (because I said so) and because despite my overall height, I have long legs.

Choose your length carefully.

  • Thigh high socks will draw attention to your thighs. So, you have issues with them, you may want to opt for Knee high or socks that hit just below the knee.
  • Knee socks that are just below the knee will highlight your bone structure and give a slimmer appearance.
  • Also, be mindful of muffin top on your thighs with socks that are too tight.

Colors and patterns

  • Light colors appear larger and will be seen first
  • Dark colors recede, however a drastic contrast in skin and sock color may cut you off.
  • Eyes will go to the boldest pattern first

How to wear them

  • If you are short, or have short legs, pair socks that hit just below the knee with shorter hem lines to give the illusion of more leg. The hem should be no longer than mid thigh (please be age appropriate)
  • Avoid pairing them with plaid skirts. We are not going for the Gossip Girl look.
  • Don’t be afraid to layer them over tights or different lengths of knee socks. My favorite pairing is with tights and boots.
  • I prefer dark/neutral solids and monochromatic patterns. Colorful patterns are better suited for young fashionistas.
