How to Tuesday: How to determine your skin type
It is officially Winter, and my skin has decided to rebel against me. The cold air has my skin extra dry and itchy. My summer and fall skin care routine is no match for the winter chill, and it is time I revamped my skin care routine. And so should you. The success of any skin care routine is to know your skin type. There are four basic skin types: Oily, Dry, Combination and Normal.
Here is a quick test to help you determine your skin type. Wash your face with a mild cleanser. Dry and wait 30 minutes. Take a tissue and press against your face in various areas. Take note of where you see or do not see oil.
If you have:
Dry Skin. Your face will feel tight and drawn. If you have dry skin, it is extremely important that you have a skin care regime that includes a good moisturizer. Dry skin has a tendancy to show signs of aging sooner than any other skin type.
Dry Skin Tips.
- Look for products that contain moisturizing agents such as glycerin.
- Avoid hot showers.
- Moisturize immediately after showering, while the skin is still damp to help seal in moisture.
- Exfoliate to remove dry, flaky skin.
- Use a humidifier in the winter months
Oily Skin. Your skin will feel oily all over after completing this test. If you have oily skin, a great cleanser will be your best friend. You may also need to supplement your routine with acne fighting products as oily skin is acne prone.
Oily skin Tips:
- Wash your twice a day. Be sure not to over wash as this will cause your body to produce more oil.
- If your oily skin is severely acne prone consider antibacterial soaps.
- Look for products that are oil free
Combination. You have oily skin in your T zone and dry to normal skin everywhere else. This skin type can be frustrating as one product may not suit your needs.
Combination Skin Tips:
- Use a gentle cleanser
- Apply moisturizer to your dry areas
- Use an alcohol free toner in your T-zone to combat shine.
- Use oil free products and make up
Normal. Your skin will not feel oily or dry. Normal skin doesn’t fall into any other category, and isn’t easily irritated. Be sure to use products formulated for normal skin, as oily skin products may be too drying and dry skin products may cause breakouts.
There is also Sensitive skin, but I believe sensitive skin to be an issue that is in addition to your skin type. For example you can has dry sensitive skin or oily sensitive skin. People with sensitive skin are frequently plagued with skin irritations or inflammations. If you believe you have sensitive skin, first ensure that you are using products formulated for your primary skin type first, then look for products that do not include common irritants and make up that is non comedogenic.
