Willow Smith’s New hairstyle

It is not the first time we’ve seen this hairstyle, but it is the first time I’ve absolutely loved it on someone. Willow Smith showed off her new do while helping her parents host the Nobel Peace Prize concert last Friday and it quickly became a trending topic. There’s nothing new about celeb kids and their hair making the news, but lately it has been surrounded by controversy. Remember Zahara-gate?

One of my favorite blogs SFTA posed the question “How young is too young to shave your head for fashion?” I spoke to a few people, and it was surprising to me that the majority felt the hairstyle was too mature for a nine year old. I’m running around all excited and showing her off like she’s my little sister, because I love the cut so much on her. I personally think that Willow is at the prime age to experiment with various fashion and hairstyles. If you’re going to shave off half of your hair, dye it pink  or put it in a Mohawk, do it when you’re 9 years old. When you’re 24 and looking for a job, it is not a good look. Society places too much value on hair and appearances, and a lot of girls feel pressured to look a certain way. I am refreshed to see a young girl confident and bold enough to chop it off.

Her brother Jaden is just as cute with his afro.

  1. I can imagine how much bullying these kids would have to put up with if they went into school with those hairstyles. I feel sorry for the poor kids who try to copy Willows Hairstyle with their dad’s clippers. Can’t think many would get it right.

Sorry I have to fall on the side of those who feel this is a little too mature for a girl her age.

This is a deeply layered topic because there’s a lot to it. First things, keep in mind the women who have even showing off this style in public have been in their mid to late 20′s. For those who aren’t happy seeing little girls wear skimpy clothing and such from their favorite pop stars it’s not a great start to be accepting them with a shaved half head of hair because Rihanna, Cassie, or LaLa wore it.

I don’t doubt Will or Jada’s parenting in the least because from what the have exposed of their family on tv I can see they’re very loving, that being said I think there’s definitely something to be said about laying down the law sometimes and letting a kid be a kid. I used to hate it but now that I am in my 20′s I really do appreciate age progression. When you shave off half your hair at 9 really though…where do you go? Tattoos, piercings? Where’s the room to mature, grow, and explore your style as you become an adult? You don’t want to run through some of your best experiences before you’re even 16. I loved getting my little manicures at 9 and feeling just a little more mature. I really can’t imagine where this puts her in terms of her own self-image (nothing offensive, just curious)

Last but not least, in my opinion and after examining both photos for a few moments I have to say the hairstyle doesn’t really do anything for Willow herself. This is a clear case of the hair wearing the woman or in this case, girl. She’s so pretty and sweet but this hairstyle doesn’t really speak to her personality or her style (just also looking at her dress, the headband, and earrings). She’s just a 9 year old girl wearing a 25 year old hairstyle.

  3. Yes, the headband does a lot to tone it down. I like that even with the edgy haircut, she still looks like a nice respectable kid.

  4. When I have children I would like to think that I am going to allow them freedom to be creative within reason. My parents would have never went for that, but then again my parents aren’t famous and my sister and I had to compliment their image.

wow. that’s an outrageous cut for a little lady! anyway,i’m with you in the notion that she is too young for the haircut. she should be at least 20, IMO. she shouldn’t add that headpiece too. i don’t think cute and punky could live together in harmony ;)

I think the style is cute on her! I think what people have to remember is Willow is the child of two HUGE stars and lives the glam life in Hollywood. I think Will and Jada are the type of parents that allow their children to experiment and encourage creativity. It’s not like Willow’s hair can’t grow back. We are all going to have our own opinions about what we’d allow our own children to do we also have to remember what our parents WOULDN’T allow us to do! LOL People often give their children a little leeway to do their thing.

  7. I think she is precious and the headband makes it less severe and mature. Still a bit more mature than I think is appropriate at that age, but only a celeb kid can pull this off.
