Your Vertical Body Type
The last two days, we address horizontal body shapes for both men and women. Determining your body shape can be difficult, but is very important to how you dress. Another important factor is your vertical body type. Horizontal body shapes compare the horizontal relationship of your chest/shoulders, waist and hips. Your vertical body type is determined by the vertical relationship of your upper and lower body. There are 3 categories of vertical body types, that are the same for both men and women.
Long torso, short legs
- Your legs are short compared to your upper body
- Your hip line height is less than half your height
- You have a long torso
Balanced
- Your upper body length is about the same as your lower body length.
- Your hip line height is about half your height
Short torso, long legs.
- Your legs are longer than your upper body
- Your hip line height is more than half your total height
Your overall height is a minimal factor when determining your vertical body type (VBT), the most important factors are your proportions. For women, the size of your breast, may effect the appearance of your torso.
Your vertical body type is important in determining your ideal garment length, and whether you are best suited with your shirts tucked in or out. It also effects the print and lines of the garments you will choose for yourself.

@ Odie, I have decided to answer your question with its very own post. Here
This is NO help for me! I am 5’5 and my torso is 3 inch longer than my legs, but I am very short waisted! My hips are so high that my waist hits right below my breasts (which are proportionally big too, making my waist even shorter).
I can’t find ANY advice for my body shape:
– short legs(31′)
– long torso(34′)
– short waist
– measurements: 35-25.5-36
Any help?
