4th of July Luau

Independence day is this weekend, and what better way to celebrate than with a party? Recently Pres. Obama hosted a Hawaiian style luau for members of congress, and I though that a luau would be the perfect theme for this July 4th holiday. The plan is suited for all ages and if held at night, the fireworks take center stage. So, here goes:

Decor:

- Make a path of palm trees and tiki torches leading to the main area. Festivities are best held outside, and can include a tent if the weather is bad.

- Decorate tables with tropical plants such as ferns, orchids and birds of paradise , and include fruits likes pineapples and coconuts ( If you’re crafty enough, you can turn coconuts into candle holders)

-  Consider using a sarong for a tablecloth, or if you prefer more of a beach themed luau a fish net, adorned with shells.

- Raffia hula skirts look very tropical when used to line buffet tables

- If your city permits, a fire pit is also a festive element to consider.

Entertainment:

- Contact a local dance school to have hula lessons and/or dancers at your party.  Kids (and adults) will have fun competing in a hula hoop contest

- Head over the Amazon.com for Hawaiian themed music

- Fireworks – use caution.

Menu:

A traditional luau will include a kalua pig, but if you’re not up to it check out this site for more ideas, including a chicken luau and a salmon recipe.

- Mai tai’s , pina coladas, and lava flows are great drinks to serve

- A large fruit spread an also double as decor.
